Abstract |
The phytoplankton of Lake Huron were studied to assess the water quality of this Great Lake. The phytoplankton species were counted in integrated and discretely collected water samples from all of Lake Huron except Saginaw Bay. Cell abundances and biovolumes of the algae were studied seasonally and spatially in the Lake. Patterns of phytoplankton indicated that Lake Huron waters were generally oligotrophic. Diatoms with broad ecological ranges, Tabellaria flocculosa and Fraqilaria crotonensis, dominated the phytoplankton year-round. Abundance and biovolume were not great during the spring bloom. Little evidence was observed that the water quality of Lake Huron had changed during the last decade. |
