Abstract | During treatment of domestic sewage by the activated sludge process large numbers of viruses are inactivated, principally by adsorption to the microbial floc. The numbers of viruses which are removed by adsorption vary over a wide range due to largely unknown factors. This study describes the interactions between the virions and exopolysaccharide (XPS) surfaces of gram negative, urealytic floc bacteria and demonstrates adsorption of virus particles by extracellular polyhydroxybutyrate granules produced by Zoogloea ramigera. |
