A comparison of identical surveys of the pre- and post-operational environmental radioactivity is made for the vicinity of the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Reactor, Wiscasset, Maine. Radionuclides are measured in laboratory samples of soil, sediment, well water, surface water, estuarine water, air particulate, air moisture, and precipitation. Field measurements of gamma-ray emitting radionuclides and high pressure ion chamber measurements are also presented. The changes in radionuclide concentration and dose are evaluated using the Maine Yankee Environmental Impact Statement. The most significant changes occur for radionuclides in soils and sediments. Details of the distribution of sediment radionuclides near the outflow of the reactor in Bailey Cove are presented with dose estimtes of 10.6 mrem/year at the sites of greatest specific activity. |
