Abstract |
The target population for the study included all noninstitutionalized, nonsmoking residents of the urbanized portion of the metropolitan area who were between 18 and 70 years of age at the time of the study. A total of 454 study participants were obtained through the use of a screening questionnaire administered to several thousand households in the study area. Each participant was asked to carry a personal exposure monitor (PEM) and an activity diary for two consecutive 24-hour sampling periods and to provide a breath sample at the end of each sampling period. Each participant also completed a detailed background questionnaire. Analyses of approximately 900 person-days of PEM and activity diary data found that personal CO exposures were higher in microenvironments associated with motor vehicles such as parking garages and automobiles. |
