Abstract |
The body of information presented in this paper is directed to atmospheric chemists and modelers who are concerned with assessing the impact of biogenic hydrocarbon emissions. A field study was conducted to determine the emission rate of alpha-pinene from a loblolly pine forest using a diffusion model. Hydrocarbon concentrations were measured both upwind and downwind of a 2 km X 6 km pine plantation. Wind speed and direction were measured above the forest canopy. A tracer, SF6 was released from the forest and collected downwind. These measurements were utilized to determine the dispersive characteristics of the atmosphere. The diffusion model was then used to calculate the emission of alpha-pinene. Adjustments were made to account for loss of alpha-pinene due to reaction with OH and O3. The average flux obtained was about 12 X 10 to the -6th power g/sq m min. |
