Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to analyze the severity of inorganic arsenic emissions from seven source categories including primary copper, lead, and zinc smelting, secondary lead smelting, cotton ginning, glass manufacturing, and arsenic chemical manufacturing. The magnitude of arsenic emissions from each source category were quantified and control systems were investigated to determine baseline and estimated best control (EBC) for arsenic. The environmental, energy, and economic costs of implementing EBC, in source categories where it is not being used, were estimated. Two source categories, primary lead smelting and arsenic chemical manufacturing, were determined to have EBC in place as a result of compliance with existing regulations. The number of people exposed to arsenic from each of the source categories will be assessed separately by EPA using emissions and stack data generated in this study. The physical and chemical characteristics of arsenic and their impact on the control of arsenic emissions from the source categories were also examined. |
