Abstract
This report reviews and evaluates the present state of techniques which have been used to determine the environmental persistence (biological, chemical and photochemical degradation) and routes of degradation of chemicals released in the environment by human activities. The techniques that were identified were reviewed and then evaluated for their ability to simulate natural environmental conditions, convenience of procedure, time requirements, necessary equipment and reproducibility. The ultimate evaluation was based on how well the methods have worked with well-known environmental contaminants. A Cost analysis of the test methods was undertaken to determine the feasibility of comprehensive screening of chemicals for environmental persistence. A relationship between chemical structure and environmental persistence is presented and some theoretical grounds for such correlations are discussed. An Attempt has been made to categorize chemicals for their suitability to various test methods based on consideration of physiochemical properties, toxicity, environmental release factors and commercial economic factors.
