Abstract | Chemical rinsing of electroplated parts and batch chemical treatment of spent processing solutions have been demonstrated to be a practical approach for abating pollution at a small captive metal finishing facility. The treatment system reduced the amount of chromium, nickel, zinc, cooper and other heavy metals in the waste to a level where substantial quantities of water could be reused. The precipitation of toxic metals in the chemical rinsing system produced an easily settled dense sludge, which was further compacted in simple outdoor earthen sludge beds for ultimate disposal as landfill.
