In case-control studies, the role of adjustments for bias, and in particular the role of matching, has been extensively debated. However, the absence of a formal statement of the problem has led to disagreements, confusion, and occasionally to erroneous conclusions. This paper formulates precisely and answers the following questions. (1) When is it necessary to adjust for a variable Z. (2) Given that the data analysis will adjust for the variable Z, is matching on Z the most efficient method of selecting controls. In answering these questions, the authors draw a sharp distinction between bias caused by confounding in the population and bias caused by the method used to select the sample.
