Abstract |
During the last decade the upper Neosho River and its major tributary the Cottonwood River in Kansas have been subject to periodic fish-kills. Eleven of the 15 fish-kills were associated with drainage from cattle feedlots. Two species which reflected changes in the fish fauna are the red shiner, Notropis lutrensis, and the bluntface shiner, Notropis camurus. One of a combination of several factors might account for such changes in species composition and diversity of the fish fauna: Significant alteration of the habitat; A difference in population structure; Differences in reproductive habits and behavior; Different oxygen requirements. Thus investigations were made to determine what differences exist between the red shiner and the bluntface shiner in the four factors mentioned. |
