Abstract |
This report extends the results of a previous study dealing with the detailed determination of consumptive water use and wet-solids residuals for coal and oil shale conversion plants and coal-fired steam-electric power generation plants located in the western United States. The present report addresses the problem of determining the degree to which wet cooling, dry cooling, or wet/dry cooling should be used as a function of the true cost of water. The economics of cooling gas compressor interstage coolers for coal conversion and cooling steam turbine condensers for coal conversion and steam-electric power generation are also examined. The report also includes results of a separate EPA/DOE study of 42 coal/oil shale conversion plantsite combinations to provide an enlarged data base for more meaningful regional water assessments. The costs of wastewater treatment and blowdown treatment and disposal are calculated for coal conversion and steam-electric power plants are also included. |
