Abstract |
The primary objective of this project was to demonstrate the feasibility and economic practicability of chemical removal of phosphorus from municipal wastewater in the 44 mgd (166,500 cu m) activated sludge plant at Grand Rapids, MI. The full-scale system for chemical phosphorus removal was implemented to meet water quality criteria established by the state of Michigan. Ferric chloride and polymer flocculant were introduced into the raw wastewater flow by automated systems. During the period of best performance when split dosage of chemicals was employed, residual phosphorus concentrations of less than 1 mg/l could be obtained. Total phosphorus concentrations in the final effluent were related to final clarifier overflow rates. The nature of the chemically precipitated sludge evolved by the process was also evaluated relative to further chemical conditioning, vacuum filtration and incineration. |
