Abstract |
Overland flow has been demonstrated to be a feasible method for treatment of either comminuted raw sewage or primary effluent in northern climates similar to Laramie, Wyoming during the warmer seasons of the year (May through October). During the other six months of the year, the wastewater distribution system can function without freezing. However, treatment of the effluent during this colder season using an application cycle of eight hours per day, five days per week would not consistently meet discharge requirements and winter storage should be considered. Results of the research indicated that in a northern climate up to a year is required to establish adequate vegetation on seeded plots to achieve treatment similar to that obtained from plots with established vegetation. Research of surge flow application of raw wastewater (pulsating the water using on/off cycles) significantly reduces the probability of orifice plugging. |
