The paper discusses a technical manual whose emphasis is on the design and evaluation of actual hood systems used to control various fugitive particulate emission sources. Engineering analyses of the most important hood types are presented to provide a conceptual understanding of the design process, consisting of identification of source parameters, calculation procedures, and techniques for evaluating hood performance. Some of the design techniques have been introduced in technical papers by Hatch Associates and have been formalized in the manual. Case studies of actual hood systems not only illustrate the application of these design methods, but also identify their limitations. Several of the case studies are from the files of Hatch Associates and provide unique insight into the diagnosis of an existing system. The purpose of the manual is to provide regulatory officials with a reference guide on the design and evaluation of hood systems to capture process fugitive particulate emissions.
