Abstract |
Background information is provided on the environmental aspects of uncontrolled and controlled military jet engine test cell operations. The environmental impact of these operations is considered on both a source and an air quality basis. Some of the uncontrolled jet engine test cell exhaust plumes exceed local opacity regulations for stationary sources. However, the air quality impact of uncontrolled operations is small. Wet-packed scrubber, jet engine clean combustor, and ferrocene fuel-additive test cell emissions control strategies are described. Clean combustor technology and its associated cost of implementation are discussed in detail. Wet-packed scrubber construction cost estimates are also examined in detail. These control methods probably reduce jet engine test cell plume opacity below local regulations. However, based on limited data, it is estimated that for some jet engine tests, applying clean combustors can cause NOx emissions to rise above local stationary source regulations. The air quality impact of controlled jet engine test cell emissions is small. Jet engine and test cell emissions data collected during this study are summarized in this document. |
