Abstract |
The history of the devleopment of a pollution index on the basis of zoomicrobial contents of surface waters is reviewed. Various methods proposed for determining the biological index of pollution were based on changes in microbial composition of waters in a self-purification process after discharge of raw sewage; they are unsuitable for measuring the levels of pollution by effluents from waste treatment plants because the microbial population changes in receiving waters are quantitative rather than qualitative. Since clean or remotely polluted waters predominantly contain algae with a steady increase in protozoa-nematode content with pollution, a ZPI and its formula are presented that has been successful in judging the desirability of the waste treatment. |
