Abstract
A full scale rapid infiltration wastewater treatment system consisting of four basins averaging 89 x 465 m. The hydraulic loading of 90 m/year was achieved by operating the basins in pairs with two weeks of wetting and two weeks of drying when secondary effluent with 10-15 mg/l suspended solids was applied. The hydraulic loading was drastically reduced when the suspended solids increased to 50-100 mg/l (mostly as algae) following detention in a stabilization pond. The renovated water typically contained 750 mg/l dissolved solids, 0.9 mg/l suspended solids, 7 mg/l nitrogen (mostly nitrate), 0.25 mg/l phosphate-phosphorus, 20 fecal coliform per 100 ml, 1 virus PFU per 100 l and 2 mg/l total organic carbon. The organic compounds included trihalomethanes, chlorinated aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides, and plasticizers.
