| Abstract |
By the year 2020, the population of the Chesapeake Bay region is expected to increase by almost three million people. Unfortunately, one of the very things that draws people to this area--the Chesapeake Bay--is threatened by their arrival. These growth pressures will add more and more challenges to the efforts to restore the health of the Chesapeake Bay. But, with careful consideration of impacts, knowledge of alternatives, and wise planning involving the stakeholders of the region, growth can be accommodated and the environment can be protected simultaneously. To assist in meeting the sustainable development challenge, the Chesapeake Bay Program adopted the 'Priorities for Action for Land, Growth and Stewardship in the Chesapeake Bay Region'. The forums provided an opportunity to share approaches/actions that could be taken by land trust, conservancy and development communities to support the 'Priorities for Action's' goal of sustainable development. The forums also identified what the Chesapeake Bay Program could do to help promote sustainable development. |
