Abstract
The study objective was to determine the applicability of a commercial coal gasification process to electric utility and industrial boiler facilities for new installations and for the 'retrofit' of existing installations. Specific objectives were evaluation of the process with respect to cost, space limitations and operational, maintenance and safety aspects. In addition, a number of technical difficulties and unresolved problems are outlined. The use of the coal gasification process may offer potential capital cost savings, compared to existing methods of sulfur removal in the combustion of coal, markets for caking-type high sulfur coals (10,000 BTU/Lb. or less) and a method of reducing particulate emissions by converting coal to a cleaner fuel.
