Abstract
The Global Ecosystems Database Project (GEDP) is an Interagency project between National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Environmental Research Laboratory-Corvallis (ERL-C) of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It is a part of NGDC's 'Global Change Database Program' (GCDP), which has the goal of providing modern, global and continental scale data (for the entire earth's surface) needed by the global change research community. The goal of the GEDP is to develop an integrated database and methods for global environmental and ecological characterizationwithin the U.S. Global Change Program. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the major conceptual definitions that have emerged from the GED Project so far. These concepts may be applied to programs that continue after the 5-year GED Project period. Details of current project status are contained in separate project review documents.
