Contents Notes
The poster's central panel depicts the mythical tortoise with the magical square ("luoshu") on its back, and the dragon horse "qillin" with the eight trigrams, "bagua," of Chinese philosophy. Two columns each on outer right and left show Chinese characters and Arabic numerals for numbers 1-10, samples of tens, hundreds and thousands, plus one million and one billion. The text box at the bottom relates the legend of Emperor Fuxi (2953-2838 B.C.) and the dragon horse, explaining the importance of the trigrams in Chinese philosophy, relates the legend of Emperor Yu (ca. 2200 B.C.) and the tortoise; and explains the construction of Chinese numerals in base 10.
