Abstract
The 20-acre Hebelka site is located in a rural area of the Weisenburg Township in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. From 1958 to 1979, the property was used as an automobile junk yard. Debris including two large piles of battery casings, empty drums, junk cars, and scrap metal were accumulated on site. A site inspection in December 1985 revealed lead in soil downgradient from the battery piles, and chromium in downgradient sediments. Lead concentrations were highest in surface soil samples (<3ft) ranging from 200-65,000 mg/kg. The record of decision addresses source control; a second operable unit will address migration pathways such as downgradient sediments and ground water. The primary contaminant of concern at the site is lead. The selected remedial action for the site includes excavation and onsite fixation of 5,000 cu yd of soil, followed by offsite disposal of treated soil at a sanitary landfill; excavation and recycling of 1,000 cu yd of battery casings; and soil backfilling and revegetation.
