Abstract
Under the WREAFS program, RREL has performed a waste minimization opportunity assessment (WMOA) at the Evans Community Hospital Histopathology Laboratory on the Ft. Carson Army Base, Colorado, in the area of waste xylene and ethyl alcohol contaminated with human tissue. The waste consists of a mixture of the two solvents, with xylene representing 0-100% and ethyl alcohol 0-50% of the waste at any given time. Xylene is one of the 17 Industrial Toxics Project (ITP) chemicals with over 200,000,000 pounds released in 1988, according to the TRI data. There are a number of known chemical substitutes for xylene, possessing varying degrees of performance efficiency. Distillation for reuse has been evaluated. In order to be more useful to larger Army hospitals, the report includes a section that sorts pollution prevention opportunities by the size of the wastestream.
