Abstract
Cryptosporidium has recently been associated with a waterborne disease outbreak in the United States. Information on the occurrence of this parasite in domestic sewage and water, however, is almost non-existant. Recently, the group developed methods for the detection of Cryptosporidium in large volumes of sewage and water. The study applied these methods to determine the relative occurrence of both Giardia and Cryptosporidium in surface waters and sewage effluents in the western United States. In summary, water sources free of Giardia cannot be assumed to be free of Cryptosporidium.
