Abstract
An adequate supply of water is essential to the needs of the Nation's citizens and industries. While the development of some new water supplies may be needed to meet the needs of a growing population, making more efficient use of existing water supplies can help meet these needs.Conserving municipal and industrial water supplies frees additional supplies for other purposes; prevents or delays construction of costly water supply and treatment facilities; decreases the amount of energy needed for pumping, treating, and heating water; and reduces the required capacity of future wastewater treatment facilities. No centralized data bank or clearinghouse on water conservation exists; such a clearinghouse could serve a useful purpose in providing water conservation information.
