Abstract
The project objective was to determine the feasibility of recharging the Platte Valley Aquifer using river water infiltrated through basins. The operating problems were found to be formidable. Phase I of the study was a water quality survey of the Platte and Elkhorn Rivers. The river discharges were lower than normal and no floods occurred during the periods of sampling. Phase II consisted of an evaluation of the aquifer and preliminary recharge tests. The average transmissibility of the awuifer was 190,000 gpd/ft and the storage coefficient was 0.17. Since the water table was only 10 to 12 feet below the surface, pumping was required to lower the water level to provide storage for the recharge water. Phase III was the operation of the recharge facilities. After completion of the system in August, 1968, there was no water at the intake because of the low river stage. (Author)
