Abstract
Alternatives to conventional water filtration plants (those using coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and rapid filtration) may be appropriate for some small water utilities. One such alternative is slow sand filtration. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recently reexamined the use of slow sand filtration for the control of selected, regulated inorganic, microbiological, and organic drinking water contaminants. The research showed that slow sand filtration is an effective treatment technology that can easily be applied to small communities.
