Abstract
The document provides a survey of literature related to the toxicity of aluminum to aquatic organisms, and a derivation of ambient water quality criteria for the protection of freshwater aquatic organisms. The criteria are limited to a pH range between 6.5 and 9.0, and are given as a four-day average concentration, which should not exceed 87 microgram/L more than once in three years on the average, and a one-hour average concentration, which should not exceed 750 microgram/L more than once in three years, on the average. Specific instructions are given on the implementation of these criteria, with optional modification of the acid-soluble analytical methodology. A complete bibliography is included.
