Abstract
The report provides an overview of sediment quality in waters of the United States. The focus is on describing qualitatively the nature and extent of contaminated sediments, i.e., bottom deposits in rivers, lakes, harbors and oceans that have been polluted with heavy metals, organic chemicals and other materials from anthropogenic sources. Such materials, also called 'in-place pollutants,' may be significantly impacting aquatic ecosystems in some areas, and may be degrading the quality of the overlying water to the extent that water quality criteria are exceeded and that uses of the water - by both aquatic life and humans - are impaired. Major sections of the report provide information on: (1) the nature of sediment contamination problems; (2) sources of contaminated sediments; (3) available responses to sediment contamination; and (4) an overview of sediment quality criteria, used to classify sediments as polluted or not. There are appendices.
