Abstract |
The oxidative pretreatment of As(III) using chlorine and oxygen was studied following quantification of As(III) and As(V) removals by activated alumina columns. Activated alumina removed 100 ug/L As(V) from a typical groundwater at pH 6.0 much more effectively than As(III). Approximately 23,500 bed volumes of water were treated before As(V) reached the 0.05-mg/L maximum contaminant level (MCL), whereas only 300 bed volumes could be treated before As(III) reached that level. Variables affecting the oxidation of As(III) by chlorine include the pH, chloride concentration, other ions, chloramine formation and TOC. |
