Abstract
The objective of the studies was to determine the concentrations at which chromium compounds contained in tannery effluents would have detrimental effects on biological sewage treatment in the activated sludge and anerobic digestion processes. It was found that in the normal operating range of an activated sludge plant (pH 7.0-8.5), the chromium concentration can be increased to at least 500 mg Cr (III)/l effluent without any detrimental biological effects. In a properly designed anerobic digester plant, the concentration can be at least 3200 mg Cr (III)/l sludge (in the form of the oxide) without interfering with the biology.
