Abstract
The purpose of this report is summarize the status and trends in Gulf coastal environments with respect to the effects of nutrient enrichment. Identifiable effects of nutrient enrichment include such direct effects as increases in nutrient concentrations (particularly N and P). loads and seasonal delivery and changes in nutrient ratios. Biological responses to nutrient changes include the obvious, direct responses of increased phytoplankton production, biomass, and abundance, and changes in species composition. Less obvious, indirect effects of nutrient enrichment include noxious algal blooms, turbidity increases and shading effects, changes in submerged aquatic vegetation, changes in secondary production, altered energy flow pathways, altered habitats, fish ills, and increase in extent, duration, and severity of oxygen-depletion events.
