Abstract
USEPA has sponsored research on the ability of slow sand, diatomaceous earth, and dual or multi-media filters to remove turbidity causing particles, coliforms, and Giardia cysts. The high volume Giardia sampler used during disease outbreaks was not appropriate for this research. Membrane filters with diameters of 142 mm or 293 mm and 5 um pore size were used to concentrate cysts from filtered waters. This technique has been used to evaluate cyst removal capabilities of the above-mentioned types of pilot filters and of small system sized (10 to 30 gpm) granular media, slow sand and diatomite filters.
