Abstract
Data presented in this report were collected during the sixth year of a research program designed to asssess ambient toxicity of living resource habitats in Chesapeake Bay. The goals of this study were to identify toxic ambient areas in the Chesapeake Bay watershed by using a battery of standardized, directly modified, or recently developed water column and sediment toxicity tests concurrently with fish and benthic community assessment (index of biotic integrity approaches). The toxicity of ambient estuarine water and sediment was evaluated during the fall of 1996 at eight stations in following areas: Patuxent River (four stations) and Chester River (four stations). The toxicity of ambient estuarine water was assessed at all stations by using the following estuarine tests: 8-d larval sheepshead minnow, Cyprinodon variegatus, survival and growth test; 8-d Eurytemora affinis (copepod) life cycle test and two separate 48-h coot clam, Mulinia lateralis embryo/larval tests.
