Abstract | A major source of pollution in the Susquehanna River Basin having a detrimental effect on water quality is the mine drainage resulting from coal mining operations in Pennsylvania. Investigations and studies were performed in five designated coal mining areas located in the basin to establish (1) the causes and extent of mine drainage, (2) the various mine drainage pollution abatement plans that are available and capable of meeting current discharge limitations as well as costs associated therewith, and (3) an abatement plan which should be implemented. The findings, conclusions and recommendations resulting from the investigations and studies are discussed in the report. |
