Abstract
A Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program initiated by the Illinois EPA in 1981 was continued in 1984. Citizens were trained to measure Secchi disc transparency, total depth, and record field observations from a boat at designated sites on their chosen lake. The report provides a historical perspective of the Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program, describes program objectives and rationale, and presents recommendations for improvement. Average transparencies for the lakes ranged from 7.2 inches to 193.2 inches. Four lakes were identified as oligotrophic, 16 mesotrophic, and the remaining 125 lakes, eutrophic, based on average Secchi disc transparency.
