Abstract
Mathematical modeling and operations research techniques are used to optimize the various subsystems that make up the total urban water system. An example is given using branch and bound techniques for locating granular activated carbon regeneration sites and for defining optimal regional configurations. The results of the analysis indicate that regional facilities can provide a least-cost solution for small water utilities faced with the need to reactivate carbon.
