Abstract
The report is one of a series on atmospheric emissions from chemical manufacturing processes. It provides such information on the manufacture of hydrochloric acid. Basic characteristics of the industry, including growth rate, manufacturing processes, product uses, and the number of producing plants in the United States are discussed. Process descriptions are given for the chlorinated by-product process and the synthesis process, which employs the direct combustion of hydrogen in chlorine. Process information includes the range of emissions of hydrogen chloride from hydrochloric acid manufacturing plants and the methods of limiting or controlling these emissions to the atmosphere. Although other contaminants such as chlorine, chlorinated organics, and other hydrocarbons emitted to the atmosphere from these plants are mentioned and in some cases discussed, they are not the primary concern of this report. Detailed descriptions of the sampling and analytical methods used to measuring such emissions are also included. (Author)
