Abstract
The paper discusses exposure generation considerations prior to implementation of sensory irritation bioassays for product emissions. Small chambers are used to generate source emissions from products for chemical and biological evaluation. Design of the source emissions chamber and test protocols affect results of the chemical and biological characterization. We designed, constructed, and determined performance characteristics for a 34-L source emissions chamber, which mates directly to a 2.3-L mouse exposure chamber and found the glass chamber to be without significant air leaks and background emissions. Reversible adsorption of decane and p-dichlorobenzene was noted. It was necessary to add a fan inside the chamber.
