Abstract |
The feasibility of utilizing finfish for the removal and recycling of excessive nutrients and algae from wastewater was investigated. The silver carp (Hypopthalmichthyes molitrix) and the bighead carp (Aristichthyes nobilis) were chosen due to their specifically adapted filter feeding mechanism. An existing wastewater treatment plant with six lagoons served as the project site. The presence of the fish had a beneficial effect on the aquatic system. In all, 14 water quality parameters along with selected heavy metals, pesticides, pathogenic bacteria, and viruses were monitored during the project. |
