A review of the geological, industrial, and health literature on vermiculite ore deposits indicates that mineralogical or chemical fingerprints may exist that would allow linking vermiculite in consumer products to a particular source ore deposit. Two characteristics of vermiculite suggest that pursuit of a set of tracers could be successful. First, vermiculite deposits are formed in geochemically distinct, ultramafic environments that may concentrate a unique set of minor or trace elements. Second, vermiculite is a mineral with particularly high cation exchange capacity and is amendable to sequestering and retaining trace elements. A two-phase approach toward identifying suitable tracers is recommended. The first phase would include a screening study of a small set of samples from the few major sources that serve the U.S. market. The screening study would determine whether enough variation exists among ore deposits to yield measurable differences in diagnostic minerals or elements. The screening study would also evaluate whether diagnostic characteristics can be detected in a few selected vermiculite products.
