Abstract
This document presents the findings of a study of the apple, citrus and potato processing segment of the canned and preserved fruits and vegetables industry for the purpose of developing waste water effluent limitation guidelines, Federal standards of performance for new sources in order to implement Section 304 (b) and 306 of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972. Effluent limitations guidelines are set forth for the degree of effluent reduction attainable through the application of the 'Best Practicable Control Technology Currently Available', and the 'Best Available Technology Economically Achievable', which must be achieved by existing point sources by July 1, 1977, and July 1, 1983, respectively. Land treatment systems such as spray or flood irrigation are effective and economic alternatives to the biological systems described. When suitable land is available, land treatment is the preferred technology for July 1, 1977, for July 1, 1983, and for new source performance standards. Control techniques, processes, wastes, and costs are covered.
