Abstract
Three domestic sewage stabilization pond systems were studied to evaluate the relationship between design criteria and performance criteria for pond systems in accomplishing specific waste treatment steps. One system consisted of a lined high-rate pond following sedimentation, another was comprised of conventional secondary waste treatment followed by a pond system, and the last consisted solely of several deep ponds in series. Study results indicated that the last system, consisting of an anaerobic pond, an unlined high rate pond, and deep high-rate polishing pond, was effective in both BOD and nutrient removals, with mean annual removals of 97.3%, 93.2%, 91.6%, and 64.5% for BOD, COD, total nitrogen, and phosphate. Results confirmed that pond functioning is determined by position with respect to other ponds and unit processes, as well as their individual design characteristics. (Author)
