The discharge of heated industrial water-such as power plant cooling water-is being studied extensively because of the possible environmental effects such effluents can cause. In the present study, a submerged, turbulent, buoyant jet discharging into water of finite depth is analyzed. The analysis was carried out for both a plane and round jet. The results predict the maximum surface temperature from such a discharge as a function of discharge angle, Froude number, and water depth. An integral approach was used in the analysis which entials making assumptions based on engineering judgement and known boundary conditions. The results will be of use to the designer of a hot water diffuser system who must be sure that the maximum surface temperature does not exceed some specified amount.
