Abstract
Aerospace technology may have led to a unique basic unit for processing solid wastes and controlling pollution. The Combustion Power Unit-400 (CPU-400) is designed as a turboelectric generator plant that will use municipal solid wastes as fuel. The baseline configuration is a modular unit that is designed to utilize 400 tons of refuse per day (the amount of solid wastes generated by a community of 150- to 200-thousand population). These 400 tons of refuse will produce up to 15,000 kilowatts of electric power. Income from the sale of the electric power generated by this system may permit a substantial reduction in the cost of solid waste disposal. Currently the CPU-400 is in the early development phase.
