Abstract
This study was conducted to analyze the impact of flow equalization on the operation and performance of municipal wastewater treatment plants. Objectives of the study were: (1) Establish the effects of flow equalization on plant performance; (2) summarize current experience with design and operation of equalization facilities; and (3) summarize unit costs of equalization facilities and appurtenances. A national survey identified facilities and provided detailed information on design; operating practices; and construction, operation, and maintenance costs. Quantitative effects of equalization on plant performance were analyzed. Quantitative design methodology is presented for the sizing and estimation of costs for equalization facilities.
