Abstract
This Record of Decision (ROD) presents the selected remedial actions for Operable Unit 5 (OU5) at Fort Wainwright near Fairbanks, Alaska. OU5 includes three source areas deferred from previously investigated operable units, as well as three source areas identified for inclusion in OU5. Four source areas are identified for action: (1) three subareas of the West Quartermaster's Fueling System (WQFS); (2) East Quartermaster's Fueling System (EQFS); (3) Remedial Area 1A (also called the Birch Hill Aboveground Storage Tanks); (4) Open Burning/Open Detonation (OB/OD) area. Two source areas are recommended for no further action under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA); (1) Former Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Range and (2) Motor Pool Buildings. In addition, several petroleum-contaminated sites, including one WQFS subarea, have been and are being addressed in accordance with an agreement between the U.S. Army and the State of Alaska.
