Abstract
A preliminary assessment was made of the environmental impacts of several types of conversion processes for producing energy or fuels from agricultural and forestry residues. Fifteen examples were selected to represent various combinations of agricultural residues and conversion processes available in various geographic regions. The conversion processes included gasification-pyrolysis (Purox), liquefaction-pyrolysis (Tech-Air), combustion (direct firing, both large and small scale), co-combustion with coal, and anaerobic digestion. Residues included animal manure, forestry and field crops, including sugar cane. Special attention was given to pesticide and herbicide residues in conversion processes.
