Abstract
The Portland Metropolitan Service District (Metro) has undertaken a comprehensive and innovative data collection program to support the development of an improved travel demand modeling system. Portland is one of the first urban areas in this country to undertake a region-wide home interview survey that is explicitly designed to support the development of new generation of travel demand models. The case study describes the data collection program undertaken in the Portland area and the associated travel demand modeling system improvement that these data are intended to support. Various sections describe: (1) the survey used for data collection; (2) sources of data and information on the scope, content and cost of travel demand forecasting; and (3) a conclusion and recommendations. A discussion of the applicability of the Portland experience elsewhere is also included.
