Abstract
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Source Measurement Technology Group (SMTG) and Emission Factors and Inventory Group (EFIG) are investigating the Hot Mix Asphalt industry to identify and quantify criteria and hazardous air pollutants (HAP's) emitted from kiln stacks, transport truck loading and silo filling at hot mix asphalt plants. The EPA report titled 'Hot mix Asphalt Plants - Emissions Assessment Report' (EPA 454/R-00-019, December 2000) presented the finding from these investigations. As part of the investigation, EFIG obtained over 300 emission tests from kiln stacks that characterize emissions of criteria pollutants and hazardous air pollutants' emissions. Additionally, SMTG sponsored two kiln stack emission tests and two emission tests of the transport truck and silo filling operations. The primary objective of the testing program was to characterize uncontrolled emissions of the criteria pollutants particulate matter (PM) and total hydrocarbons (THC) and emissions of voltaic and semi-volatile organic HAP's.
